Earth Hour isn't supposed to fix the environment. It is marketing the idea of 'using less'. It is only a failure in that it underestimates the ability of everyday people to not get caught up in a "Hippy vs The Man" false dichotomy mindset.

They had Earth Day in the UK, where everyone was encouraged to limit their consumption of electricity for a day or something, reports showed that the net effect was negligible even though the event was heavily sponsored and publicized.

Actually i was surprised at how word spread, our neighborhood was probably 60-80% dark at 8pm. At least here in NJ Earth Hour was a big success. To be honest shutting off the bazillion lights I had in the house made me feel a big guilty of how wasteful I've been lately, and I think that's the point. I believe this is a great event to put in perspective the notion that you don't need 2 tvs on and lights on in places you're not and cut down on wasteful spending.

Yeah, I participated last night, and I knew I wasn't offsetting all the horrible polluting I've done this year with one hour of power off. What really hit me was that there was nothing to do. IT was pitch black, so no books or comics or zines, no compy, no TV. It really struck me that I rely on electricity for so much, and my life actually revolves around combustion. I ended up listening to a solar radio (that has batteries charged up from the previous days sun; I thought that would be OK) and drinking a beer, wherein I met my failure, for when I opened the fridge, the little light popped on... DAMN,.. but the beer was good.

Yeah I actually read a magazine by candlelight and some of my old manga. It's funny how much electricity we use just for sitting down an relaxing. On the up side I found a lightbulb that was not compact fluorescent so that was fixed asap.

i burned trashed furniture with used motor oil , drove around for the hell of it and slept with the bathroom light on and dvd and telly blazing....
