National Popular Vote Interstate Compact

[rabidrant] Fuck the Electoral College. Seriously, fuck it. It got Bush elected in 2000 despite losing the popular vote by over 500,000. It systematically overrepresents ignorant douchebags who voted for Bush. We wouldn't be in Iraq, we wouldn't have the Patriot Act, we wouldn't have torture in Guantanamo, we wouldn't have 2 more Supreme Court justices for life trying to expand executive power and repeal roe v. wade, and two thirds of the bullshit that went on in the last 8 years never would have happened if our goddamn elections used the popular vote. Look at what Gore has done since then, you know he's a genuine philanthropist. All Nixon, Reagan, and Bush Sr did for "philanthropy" after leaving office was make a self-glorifying musuem/library. We would be a lot better off if the electoral college had been abolished in 1999. Of course Gore isn't perfect, or even close, but he's a hell of a lot better than Bush, McCain, and Hillary (maybe Obama too).[/rabidrant]

Call up your representatives and tell them that unless they're on the record voting for the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact before the 2008 election, you will vote and campaign against them, and publish infrared video of their extramarital affairs online...

The only benefit of the electoral college, as it was originally conceived, was about taking time to inform the delegates and giving them a choice, not forcing them to vote for whoever sent them as a distorted proxy for the popular vote.

I say the Electoral College should be abolished too. Small states might whine, but who cares? That's what the Senate is for, IMHO.

Wrong wrong wrong.

The electoral college is a safety net. For one thing, if a candidate dies from Nov-Jan there is a way for electoral college to select better choice. It also prevents weird things like China bribing tons of people to buy their votes, or other weird things. It also can be used to overturn corrupt state gov't.

Here is the flaw with your popular vote nonsense. You assume every state is equal when it comes to counting and casting a ballot, so that one person one vote.

In reality this is not the case. There are counties in rural places where it is so corrupt and they pay you $5 to cast their ballot and bring them your blank. At least with electoral college, we semi-limit the damage one bad state elections can have on the overall election.

Let's say CA decided to choose the next president or the Gov of CA runs.. they could just stuff the ballot box and win the popular vote PERIOD. With electoral college there is more input into the system where smaller states still have a stake in the elections.

Only ignorant people keep repeating these ideas of popular vote and getting a "receipt" to prove how you voted.
