That Iranian girl that was shot

Horribly sad sad footage and situation. So sad that I watched it once and I do not want to ever see it again. Since then, I've seen about 100 videos on the sift of what appears to be the same thing. Since I don't want to watch it again, I can't really determine if these vids are technically dupes. In my opinion, there's no reason for having 4 videos of different close up angles, that would be exploitation. Furthermore, since the first one I saw posted, was taken down by the submitter because some of us agreed it was snuff, I don't see why others should be sifted. It's not fair to the orignal sifter...

If somebody could do a bit of dirty work for me, I've got some promotes in there for you. I know it's not much, but I think it'd benefit the sift in the long run...

Link em, and I'll discard the whole lot.

To the posters, make a sift talk with them, they are all snuff under our own rules and will be discarded as such. No matter how gory or not, the same scene has been judged already. Sift talks do not have the same filter, and therefor you can post them there, preferably with a proper warning.

There are some here already.

I disagree. "Snuff" implies they have no redeeming value, i.e., they simply exist for macabre rubber-necking purposes. What happened to Neda is newsworthy, and we have allowed newsworthy deaths to be posted here before. It's no different than this:

That footage became a symbol of the Vietnam War. We've all seen stills of this in our history books. Is it still snuff? Neda's sad death has become symbolic of the Iranian struggle for freedom. Don't suppress it because it makes you uncomfortable. Don't help the Iranian government get away with this.

The first sifter who posted it shouldn't have discarded it, in my opinion. We only need one here, just like we only need one of any video here. But don't discard them all.

Make a sift talk, put it in there. He body is not even cold yet and we want multiple angle, slowmo replays. I'm not entirely comfortable with that.

In time I can certainly see that video being sifted, but I don't think right now is a good idea. But I'm only one voice, so if most want it to be sifted I will accept that.

Edit: We are not the world news, we should not be putting this front and center of what essentially is an entertainment site, in my opinion.

there's at least one post where the footage is put in context with a CNN report and doesnt have the 'more extreme' shots.

I consider it much more siftworthy than the uncut video, which you would be led to search for if it was your inclination...

I didn't discard because i thought it violated the rules per se... i just felt it was the better choice after thinking about it -- and i think duckmans video validates that.. its all good! my initial reaction was it needed to spread like wildfire... but i failed to think about how trying to get a sift off the footage i submitted.. was kinda fucked up. i dont feel awesome about it.

Support Duckman's post or any other ones that have actual info. thanks for blog links sage

We are a video aggregation site. We put what people vote for front and center. Lotsa people vote for news and politics; almost every vote I've ever gotten came from one or the other.

More people vote for funny or generally cool stuff, but there's almost always a politics/news video in the Top 15, sometimes several.

I don't think the video of Neda is gonna be a 200+ vote getter, but it deserved a solid spot on the Top 15. It probably won't get it now.

My question is?
What's so important about this event?
1.That an innocent girl died?
2.The possible revolution it may spark?

1. Innocent people die everyday...it's sad, I know, but hardly newsworthy to us
2. It'd have to spark something newsworthy before we can tell if this was a pivotal point for the Iranian people...so far, nothing has really happened, see answer #1.

The "Burning Monk" died in 1963. America didn't end its military involvement in Vietnam until 1973, one whole decade later, and the South Vietnamese government didn't fall until 1975. Does that diminish the historical importance of what this monk did? I don't think so, and I believe most historians would agree with that.

Maybe Neda's death won't end Iran's totalitarian regime by tomorrow or next week, but it will still have long-lasting significance. People are still talking about her, and they will for years to come. People still remember Tank Man, even though the Tiananmen Square protests were brutally crushed 20 years ago, right?

Neda's death is a historical moment. It belongs here.

"Please do not post pornography or 'snuff' films (which we define as the explicit depiction of loss of human life displayed for entertainment).

Note: The presence of human fatality is acceptable and not considered 'snuff' if presented as a limited portion of a lengthy educational, informative news report or documentary. Our definition of 'snuff' does include but is not exclusive to any short clip in which a human fatality occurs whether or not any victims are actually visible on camera."

According to our definition of snuff, the newscast showing the girl dying from the bullet wound wouldn't necessarily constitute snuff unless it's shown for entertainment purposes instead of informative. However, there has to be a line drawn between sifting an almost identical video for the purpose of adding to or clearing up a video, and trying to squeeze out as many star points as possible from a sad event like this. Sifting that same girl getting killed four times crosses that line in my humble opinion.
