Oh no! Someone isn't bending over backwards to fundamentalist ideals! I hope we can get a high ranking cleric or ayatollah to condemn these actions soon!

I don't know about this. I'm an atheist, and I too think the burqa is a repressive symbol, but basically the French government is outlawing certain articles of clothing. That smacks of heavy-handedness to me. I wouldn't want to strip away someone's civil liberties in an effort to produce an egalitarian society. I also believe it's a violation of Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights:

Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance.

One manifestation of faith for some Muslim women is the burqa. Now I realize the burqa itself can also violate a woman's freedom of conscience when she is forced to wear it by her family or community. However not all Muslim women are forced to wear it. This is a sticky wicket.

The French government is going about this the wrong way, IMHO. Maybe they should set up support centers specifically for Muslim women in France who are being forced to live lives they don't want to lead, sort of like centers for abused women. If they can help those Muslim women make the transition from patriarchy to true independence then I think they will better achieve their goals of egalitarianism.

However all of that would involve money, and it's much easier to make stupid laws than to actually extend a helping hand to those you claim to be looking out for.

Upvote for the controversy, not the policy.

^ I like the idea of setting up support centers.

Having lived in a middle-eastern country for years, I can attest to the validity of the idea that the Burqa is in no small part a cultural item, rather than an item symbolizing religiosity or patriarchal oppression; many women are proud of their head wear.

Orhan Pamuk's novel "Snow" deals with this very issue. The book is about how in an increasingly secular Turkey, many women were being prohibited from wearing head scarves, and the many suicides that ensued. A fictional account of a very real story.

I mean, its a very sticky issue indeed, KP.

Incidentally, the BBC's world have your say has been hosting some very lively discussions on this topic lately: http://worldhaveyoursay.wordpress.com/

I'd like to point out that bras are also oppressive.

I really don't know how to feel. I am leaning your direction, Kronosposeidon... but at the same time, I don't feel it's appropriate to give religion complete free reign. For example, bigotry is inherent in religion, often, but it shouldn't be permitted.

But then, people should have the freedom to wear what they want...

This issue is anything but black and white for me.

I do like the idea of support groups, though. Not sure it would make a huge difference for many of the oppressed women, but it could be a start towards fueling a more self driven feminist movement, rather than forcing things upon the women. In the end, I agree that it would be a smarter approach.

Respect to Sarkozy for getting so much out of so little. These were a few words in a long speech made in front of the French Parliament. No laws were enacted, still he got international coverage for a statement that was mainly directed to his most conservative voters. He's even got Al-Qaeda mentioning it!
